Miami Vice

by Jackrabbit Slim
Jeff Wells writes that Miami Vice is "the Big One" to watch for this summer. Hoo boy. Maybe I'm in the wrong demographic, but I have little desire to see this. I respect Michael Mann (I loved Heat, Last of the Mohicans, and The Insider, liked Collateral, was iffy on Ali) but I didn't care for the TV show, and Colin Farrell has fast become an actor to avoid. Unless the critics cream all over this I'll likely pass and wait for the DVD.

What is everyone else's anticipation of Miami Vice?

I guess it's a matter of perspective ... I feel exactly the same way you do about those films but to me that makes Miami Vice a must-see no matter what. You make as many great films as Mann has, you've earned the right for your next movie to be blindly anticipated.

If it sucks, so be it. I'll just blame Farrell, like I did with Alexander.

As I pointed out before (I think it must have been our earlier forum), this Miami Vice remake is somewhat unprecedented in the recent spate of TV show recycling since you've got a respected director remaking the TV show he was the creative force behind twenty years ago. I loved the show back in the day for the way it oozed attitude and style and for the way it made me feel good about my then-new stereo TV which wasn't getting much of an aural workout from other programs. It all looks very dated now, but I'm up for the movie remake. Of course the ultimate would be if the film was a remake of the "Shadow in the Dark" episode, itself something of a remake of Mann's "Manhunter," which came out the same year.

I must have missed something in the 80's. I watched a lot of TV, but as for Miami Vice, I could take it or leave it. I wasn't fond of the actors, and although it was visually interesting, what stands out most prominently in my mind was the clever way they featured a bad guy named Richard for the sole purpose of allowing Don Johnson to say, "Listen, DICK!" And someone must pay for all those pastel suits worn with t-shirts. I think I'll pass on the film until it hits DVD.

Don't you blame Farrell for everything?

Sorry, still no computer, and still very little time off from work. Only seen one film and that was Pride & Prejudice (I absolutely agree with whoever wrote that review before - it's a delightful film, classic, with small details I'll pore over later, very much look forward to Atonement).

But Miami Vice is the film I'm most looking forward to this summer. Shares top billing for the year with Scorsese's Departed and De Niro's Good Shepherd.
